WELDING, PLATE REPLACEMENT & NDT

Project Manager control of structural repair, welding quality and inspection

Welding and plate replacement on a yacht require careful control of material specification, repair geometry, welding procedure, heat input, accessibility, inspection and final acceptance.

The Project Manager must coordinate between the shipyard, welding subcontractor, Class surveyor, naval architect and yacht representatives while maintaining full traceability of the repair.

The objective of this module is to ensure that structural repairs are completed using appropriate materials, qualified personnel, controlled welding methods and documented inspection.

Key responsibilities

  • Confirm the approved repair scope before cutting begins.
  • Verify the material grade and thickness of replacement plate.
  • Confirm material certificates are available.
  • Confirm welder qualifications where required.
  • Confirm the applicable Welding Procedure Specification.
  • Establish the cutting limits and repair geometry.
  • Record the damaged structure before removal.
  • Confirm temporary structural support where required.
  • Control removal of plate to avoid unnecessary structural damage.
  • Confirm weld preparation, root gap and edge preparation.
  • Monitor welding sequence and heat input.
  • Control distortion during fabrication and welding.
  • Confirm back-gouging or full-penetration requirements where applicable.
  • Establish inspection hold points.
  • Coordinate visual inspection and NDT.
  • Ensure unacceptable weld defects are repaired correctly.
  • Confirm final inspection before coating reinstatement.
  • Maintain material, welding, NDT and photographic traceability.
  • Obtain Class or surveyor acceptance where required

WELDING & NDT CONTROL CHECK

Before and during structural welding, the Project Manager should verify, where applicable:

  • Approved repair drawing
  • Original structure drawing
  • Replacement plate dimensions
  • Plate thickness
  • Material grade
  • Material certificate
  • Heat / batch traceability
  • Welding Procedure Specification
  • Welder qualification
  • Welding consumables
  • Consumable storage condition
  • Joint preparation
  • Root gap
  • Bevel angle
  • Tack-weld condition
  • Alignment
  • Temporary supports
  • Welding sequence
  • Heat-input control
  • Interpass temperature where required
  • Distortion-control measures
  • Back gouging where applicable
  • Weld accessibility
  • Ventilation
  • Hot-work permit
  • Fire watch
  • Adjacent-area protection
  • Visual weld inspection
  • Dye penetrant testing
  • Magnetic particle testing
  • Ultrasonic testing
  • Radiography where specified
  • NDT acceptance criteria
  • Repair of defects
  • Final NDT
  • Surveyor / Class attendance
  • Photographic record
  • Coating reinstatement

PROJECT MANAGER COMPETENCY TEST

Scenario 1 — Material Traceability

A replacement steel plate has already been cut to shape, but the supplier cannot provide the material certificate.

Question:
What should the Project Manager do?

A. Install it because the dimensions are correct
B. Confirm material identity and certification before installation
C. Use it and request the certificate afterwards
D. Increase the weld size

Correct answer: B

Why:
Structural material must be traceable to the required grade and specification before installation.

Scenario 2 — Welding Procedure

A subcontractor proposes using a welding method different from the approved procedure because it is faster.

Question:
What should happen?

A. Approve it if the welder is experienced
B. Confirm technical approval before changing the welding procedure
C. Allow the welder to decide
D. Continue and inspect afterwards

Correct answer: B

Why:
A change to the welding method may affect penetration, heat input, distortion and structural integrity. The approved procedure should be followed unless formally revised.

Scenario 3 — NDT Defect

Ultrasonic testing identifies a weld defect outside the acceptance criteria.

Question:
What is the correct action?

A. Paint over the weld
B. Document the defect, repair it using the approved method and repeat the required inspection
C. Ignore it if the weld looks acceptable externally
D. Reduce the acceptance criteria

Correct answer: B

Why:
Rejectable defects require documented repair and reinspection before acceptance.

Scenario 4 — Closing the Repair

The repaired structural area is about to be insulated and permanently closed, but the final inspection report has not yet been issued.

Question:
What should the Project Manager do?

A. Close the area to protect the programme
B. Hold the closure until required inspection and acceptance are complete
C. Close it and photograph the outside
D. Ask the owner after delivery

Correct answer: B

Why:
Final inspection and acceptance should occur before repaired structure becomes inaccessible.

MODULE COMPLETION

Before completing this module, the Project Manager should be able to:

  • understand why material traceability is important
  • identify the purpose of welding procedures and welder qualifications
  • understand basic weld preparation requirements
  • recognise the importance of welding sequence and heat control
  • identify common NDT methods
  • understand inspection hold points
  • manage repair and reinspection of weld defects
  • maintain structural-repair documentation
  • coordinate Class, surveyor and welding-subcontractor involvement
  • ensure final acceptance before repaired structure becomes inaccessible
